Ladles and Jellyspoons, Baubles and Gerbils – roll up for a fabulously funny eco-show in a solar-powered Big Top. EcoCentrics and Transition Town Shaftesbury present ‘A Tipping Point’, a family show which combines clowning and comedy, music and artwork to encourage children and their families to explore how their actions in everyday life can affect the planet.

The show, written by Amanda Boulter from Winchester University and directed by Paul Jordan, kicks off with a procession from Abbey School Hall which begins the music and mayhem with a large band of talented local musicians and fantastic recycled artwork – all made by children from local schools. Mark Blackham plays the Circus Ringmaster who welcomes the audience into the tent and introduces us to the two naughty hula-hooping clowns, Tilly Twist and Hobbit, and the beautiful Spirit of the Earth. We find out all about CO2 and carbon footprints through songs, antics with the clown car CO2MAX, a huge gorgeous globe, and the terrifying Seesaw of Doom, all designed and created by Peter Rush and a team of artists.

The wacky circus music, especially composed for the show by Karen Wimhurst, will be performed by Karen on clarinet and the wonderful accordionist Pete Rosser from Tango Siempre. The show has received fabulous support from the local community, with many people contributing their time, talents and creative ideas, many local businesses such as Travis Perkins and Blackmore Vale Printers offering materials and services, and charities such as Trinity Trust, Shaftesbury Charitable Trust, the Sustainable Development Fund from the Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs AONB, and organisations such as University of Winchester and NDDC providing funding.

Saturday 31st May - Bus Trip & Picnic Brookland Wood, Fontmell Magna
ON THE BUSES - TRANSITION TOWN SHAFTESBURY PICNIC AT BROOKLAND WOOD

Members of the Transiton Town Shaftesbury group enjoyed a day out on the buses last Saturday courtesy of Nordcat who offered free travel in North Dorset for the whole of May.

The incentive to use local transport offered by Nordcat seemed like too good an offer to pass up and TTS thought it the ideal opportunity to get out in the spectacular Dorset countryside and at the same time promote our local bus service. In a rural area where we are so dependant on our cars for getting to work, shopping, visits to hospital, etc, it feels very hard to make a start to wean ourselves off our addiction to our cars. Taking a day out seemed like a good way to start.

The day out to Brookland Wood in Fontmell Magna turned out to be the perfect antidote to 21st century living. A leisurely visit to a beautiful village, a picnic in the shade of a community woodland, paddling in the neighbouring stream, a visit to a Dorset Arts Week exhibition, a visit to the well equipped village play ground for the children and a swift half at the pub for the grown ups.

We all agreed that the day had been a great success, no driving, no traffic jams, no parking, and all for free. Where will the TTS group be off to next ? The possibilities are endless, bus and train trips, cycle and walking excursions. This lovely slowed down pace, simple pleasure, stress free, local kind of day trip could well catch on !!

Transition Town Shaftesbury are a group exploring ideas and actions that help to decrease our dependency on fossil fuels. In the months to come, the group will be looking at how Shaftesbury might “power down” in every aspect of life, whether that be food production, building, travel, waste management.
